Abby and I had a wonderful Mardi Gras in New Orleans; I took very few photographs, and I didn’t worry whether I would ‘capture’ any given sight, sound, event, or preserve it, document it, substantiate myself with its digital evidence. It was a release from my duties as a nervous, unpaid curator of the self, a documentarian of vain trivia. I felt joy for nearly all of our time there.
In the past, however, I worked a bit harder. I’ve taken some photographs of Mardi Gras with which I’m happy; I think they manage, here and there and despite their technical clumsiness and under-culled quantity, to present some of the visual beauty of the carnival parades. This beauty —and the vital, bawdy, syncopated music, and the thrill of kindly crowds, and much more— is a larger part of why New Orleanians love Mardi Gras than the clichéd debauchery of topless tourists and Budweiser beads.
In any event: here are some better Mardi Gras photos, mostly from 2009 and 2010. You should go next year.

Dinner at Domenica last night: Wild Mushroom Pizza: mushrooms, bacon, fontina and a yard egg. 1/2 price during their happy hour and paired with a Stone Brewing Weedwacker IPA. Followed by Chris Thomas King concert at Ogden Museum After Hours, then a yummy champagne cobbler at Bellocq (and a vermouth tasting). Chatted with the chef/owner/head at each of them.
I am spoiled in this city.

Hey y’all,
Quinn here. I want to introduce you to Sno-La Snowball Lounge, located at 3204 Lake Villa Dr. Metairie, LA 70002.
A few weeks ago, Enjoli and I learned about a new snowball business that was doing something different: serving snowballs with a gourmet twist indoors complete with a lounge. We thought it sounded kind of cool and passed by. Let me tell you, this place is awesome!
Once we arrived, the familiar sounds of Ne-yo filled the room, comfortable lounge chairs and tables awaited us, the walls decorated with New Orleans Art and various pieces of Fleur de Lis’s caught our eyes, plus the cooling AC was a relief from 97°+ heat.
By the time we got to the counter to order our snowballs, we were already having fun. Looking over the menu, we decided on something different so we can sample each other’s, Enjoli got Strawberry Cheesecake and I tried Red Velvet Cheesecake. The snowballs themselves are rich and delicious. What makes these snowballs so good is that they were stuffed with actual cheesecake! Other flavors on the menu include Georgia Peach, Tiger’s Blood and limited sugar free flavors such as Granny Smith Apple, Lemonade and Chocolate. Also on the menu is Ice Coffee, assorted desert cakes and assorted candy, which can also be used as a topping for your snowball.
While enjoying our snowballs, we played a game of Jenga and listened to Michael Jackson, and basically chilled out.
What’s also great about this snowball lounge is it will be open ALL YEAR ROUND!
Who can beat comfortable chairs, the escape from hot weather with cooling AC, music, board games and gourmet snowballs? There is much fun to be had at Sno-La Snowball Lounge!
